How does a monitoring service work
The alarm system is set up so that if the alarm is triggered, a phone call is made to the monitoring service automatically, where the personnel on duty call your home first and try to determine if a false alarm has sounded or if a real break-in has happened. This can save you money in case of an accidental triggering of the alarm
If a break-in is in progress they then call the local law enforcement who can then get to your house quickly and investigate the matter. This kind of home protection is especially valuable when you are away from home as that is when most burglaries take place
So which monitoring service should you choose? There is a wide variety of these services available and not all are as vigilant as you would like them to be. Our suggestion is to poll your neighbors, family, friends, and perhaps your real estate agent to see what recommendations they have for a reliable service that they know of. Quite often, you will begin to hear the same names come up in conversation, and that is the short list of companoies that you should investigate regarding the features they offer that you feel will be of most benefit to you
It is not necessary to have an alarm monitoring service, but it is cheap insurance that does you one extra layer of protection in your home security plan
Alarm-System Monitoring Law

In January 2004, a new law affecting alarm-monitoring companies went into effect.
Under the new law, each alarm-monitoring company must obtain an annual license consisting of two factors.
The first is a flat-rate fee which ranges from $100 to $500, based on the total number of alarm systems monitored.
The second factor is an annual fee for each individually monitored alarm system. Alarm monitoring companies are also responsible for each burglary, panic or robbery false-alarm occurrence in the city (NOT false fire alarms).
These annual license fees and police false-alarm fees are the responsibility of, and billed to, the alarm-monitoring companies rather than individual alarm-system subscribers.
These fees may be passed on to customers to recoup the expense to the monitoring company.
Think about how you and your family live. Is there anyone in your house that often gets up in the middle of the night to walk around ? or do you have a large pet who can set off a sensor. These circumstances will help you select which type of motion sensor you need and how it is installed. However members of your household may have to turn off the alarm in the middle of night to prevent false alarms.
Choose a system with a control panel that can monitor all the zones you have in your home. Each window or door integrated into the system is considered a zone. A system is capable of controlling 8-32 zones.
